Semmtech Community Event 2025: Insights, Innovation, and Inspiration for a Data-Driven Future

semmtech community event

This October, we hosted the second annual Semmtech Community Event 2025, bringing together colleagues, partners, and clients. This year, the event focused on what we, and our clients, did best this year: successful digitalization and how to make the most out of your data. If you missed it, here is a quick recap of what made this year’s gathering so valuable.

The afternoon featured four key presentations, each sharing hands-on experience and forward-looking perspectives.

1. Data-Driven Work in Practice – with Ben van der Burg

Ben opened the event with energy and clear insight. He explored how data shapes better decision-making and enables more agile business strategies. His message was simple yet powerful: organizations that utilize data effectively can innovate more quickly and respond more effectively to change. He encouraged attendees to move from collecting data to actively learning from it.

2. Behind the Scenes of the Ministry of Defence’s iGIM Project – with Maj. Ronald C.

The iGIM project is a great example of digital transformation in action. The defence industry faces rising demand, creating pressure on facilities and resources. Fragmented data and inefficiencies can significantly slow down projects. Semmtech supported the Ministry of Defence by digitalizing processes and introducing a unified data approach. Together, we built a standardized library, spatial planning, and an integrated systems engineering framework. As a result, planning improved, collaboration strengthened, and project outcomes became more predictable. This presentation showed how structured data can directly enhance operational success.

3. Why Open Source Matters – with Daan Oostinga and Herman Hoekman

Next, Daan and Herman explained why Open Source software is a better option than proprietary SaaS products for governmental organizations. Many Dutch municipalities, provinces, and water authorities currently tender in a way that they will pay for the development of solutions and then ‘lease back’ the commercial product. Simply because their requirements differ and functionalities are too niche for scalable SaaS products, which don’t allow, nor need, bespoke development. Open Source solutions for Asset Information Management, for instance, are a perfect example of how to retain ownership rights, share development costs, and reduce dependency on a single vendor. 4. Navigating the AI Revolution – with Annelien van Drooge and Coen van Gruijthuijsen

The final session from Annelien and Coen explored the role of AI in today’s organizations. With a 22% increase in AI adoption among Dutch companies in 2024, interest is high; yet, many still struggle to see tangible results. The speakers emphasized that success hinges on utilizing AI with context and structure. When AI tools access reliable organizational knowledge through Ontologies and Knowledge Graphs, they produce more accurate and trustworthy insights.  We call this ‘AI with Guardrails’. Techniques like Graph RAG make this possible, enabling users to ask questions in natural language and retrieve answers that are grounded in their own organization’s knowledge and data.

The event closed with lively discussions, networking, and shared enthusiasm for what lies ahead. Each session demonstrated that innovation is not solely about technology. It is about people, collaboration, and the smart use of information.

For everyone involved in managing complex assets and projects, these insights convey a single message: structured data and open cooperation are the foundation for future success.
